One of my siblings' name is Aminat. I have been curious of her and what she stood for, especially knowing she is from the North, where women are seen and not heard. She was a warrior who fought and won a lot of wars and they are proud of her. She has become a myth and legend warrior of her century.
These are my findings about this powerful woman from the North;
Amina, also known as Aminatu was born in 1533 and died in 1610 and was a Hausa historical figure in the city state Zazzau (now city of Zaria) in Kaduna State is now what is called the northwest region of Nigeria.
She ruled in the mid- sixteenth century. She was a very controversial figure whose existence has been questioned by some historians. Her real biography has been somewhat obscured by subsequent legends and folk tales.
Her father was king Nikatau, the 22nd ruler of Zazzau and her mother was Queen Bakwa Taruñku. She had a younger sister named Zaria for whom the modern city of Zaria (Kaduna State) was renamed by the British in the early 20th century.
Amina was raised in her grandfather's court and was favoured by him. According to anthropologist David E. Jones, he introduced her to military and political matters.
Photo source: Wikipedia At age 16 Amina was named magajiya (heir apparent) and was given 40 female slaves (kilyanga). She has many suitors trooping, but chose not to get married.
After the loss of her parents to the great beyond around 1566, Amina's brother became the king of Zazzau. At this time, Amina has been established as a leading warrior in her brother's cavalry and gained notoriety for her military skills.
She is still celebrated today in traditional Hausa praises song as "Amina Daughter of Nikatau" a woman as capable as a man and was able to lead wars.
